Why a Sunflower Looks at the Sun

A young sunflower turns its head to follow the sun, because its stem grows unevenly. In the morning the east side of the stem grows faster, and the flower bends west, toward the sun. In the evening it is the other way around. So the stem works like a slow motor that turns the heavy head full of seeds. When the flower grows up, the motor stops, and it stays facing east, where the sun rises.
