How a Thermometer Works
Inside a thermometer lives a colored liquid that, like everything, gets bigger when it gets warm. When you hold a thermometer in your hand, the liquid warms up, takes more room and creeps up the little tube, like an ant up a blade of grass. And when it's cold, the liquid shrinks and slides down, showing that it has turned chilly.
